Comic’s PAC Is More Than a Gag (New York Times)

Stephen Colbert as the fictional Stephen ColbertStephen Colbert, image via WikipediaMr. Media® Radio NetworkEmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYouTube

Let’s start with a spot political quiz. Which of the following are legitimate political action committees known as Super PACs, and which is fake?

A) Citizens for a Working America

B) Make Us Great Again

C) Citizens for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow

D) We Love USA

If you guessed that C was the fake, you’d be wrong. It was a trick question: these are all legitimate Super PACs. “Citizens for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow” was created by the comedian Stephen Colbert, which makes it funnier.

But not by much. Citizens for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow may be a running gag on “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central, but it is spending money as it sees fit, with little in the way of disclosure, just like its noncomedic brethren.

What Would Hillary Clinton Have Done? (New York Times)

Black & white portrait photograph of Hillary R...Hillary Clinton, image via WikipediaMr. Media® Radio NetworkEmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYouTube

This possibility scared me because I knew, with a furious surety, that if she went on to win the presidency, I and the handful of other Clinton supporters in my privileged, mediacentric, Obama-drunk circle would be forced to spend the next four to eight years hearing the words “We told you so,” spoken at various accusatory pitches. Every time she made a compromise, lost a battle or started a war, those of us who had — often shamefacedly — proclaimed a preference for her would have to answer for it, and more profoundly, have to answer for the dream we dashed. We would have to apologize to the world for robbing it of an imagined Barack Obama presidency.

Three years after that intense and acrimonious time, in a period of liberal disillusionment, some on the left are engaging in an inverse fantasy. Almost unbelievably, they are now daydreaming of how much better a Hillary Clinton administration might have represented them.

Why Obama Wants You to Eat Your Peas (Esquire)

By Elizabeth Gunnison
July 12, 2011

It's been a big couple of days for the pea people. That's because at a White House press conference on Monday, President Obama name-checked the little green vegetables in the course of discussing negotiations about how to solve the nation's debt crisis:

"It's not going to get easier. It's going to get harder. So we might as well do it now: pull off the Band-Aid, eat our peas. Now is the time to do it. If not now, when?"

The pea industry is, naturally, aflutter.

Inside Sarah Palin's Movie Premiere For 'The Undefeated' (The Hollywood Reporter)

Cover of "The Undefeated"Not the Sarah Palin movie (and not the "celebrity" from Michele Bachmann's Iowa hometown), this is the cover of The UndefeatedMr. Media® Radio NetworkEmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYouTube

Despite announcing that press would be banned from theater, a few media outlets (including THR) obtained last-minute seats for the debut of the former VP candidate's documentary.

PELLA, IOWA – They sure do movie premieres funny around here.

There was no red carpet and no bright lights – it wasn’t even dark yet. And the biggest celebrity in attendance, Sarah Palin, decided at the last moment not to pull up to the theater in an SUV but to park it around the corner and stroll down the street unannounced. She was about 50 yards out when the media hordes noticed and repositioned their cameras.

Palin was in Pella – population 10,000 – for the world premiere of The Undefeated, a documentary about her political career. She was dressed casually in bellbottom jeans and a shiny, silver belt, and was accompanied by her husband, Todd.

The job-killing governor (St. Petersburg Times Editorial)

Generic image of rick scottRick Scott, image via WikipediaEmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYouTube

Gov. Rick Scott will sign into law today a $69.7 billion state budget for 2011-12 that he boasts is all about creating jobs and reducing Florida's high unemployment. In fact, it is a job-killing budget that threatens the state's anemic recovery and makes the state less attractive to new residents and businesses. The governor and the Legislature are starving the state instead of investing in it. Let us count the ways they are undermining Florida's economy:

1 State workers Positions in prisons, social services and other areas have been slashed. Scott says he's only interested in private sector jobs. State employees buy houses, cars and appliances, too — even if they have not had raises in five years. Estimated Jobs lost: 4,500.

2 Public schools Spending will drop by $542 per student, or 8 percent. School districts are sending out lay-off notices to thousands of teachers, including 1,400 in Broward and 1,100 in Pinellas. Some of those could keep their jobs. But Pasco schools could eliminate 470 overall positions and Pinellas could cut 400 positions. School districts are the largest employers in many counties. Estimated jobs lost: THOUSANDS.

In this month’s issue of More magazine, Ronald Reagan’s daughter strips down for the camera. She is 58. This isn’t the first time Patti Davis has been photographed naked. At 42, she posed for Playboy. And while posing nude isn’t exactly a novel idea, her thoughts on body image — particularly as a recovering addict — are.

Her body is beautiful — and not just because wow — but because of what she’s put it through.

If Only it Were a Very Bad Joke (Back To Basics)

"The Honorable Rick Perry (front right), ...Image via Wikipedia
EmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYouTube

The Back To Basics blog caused me to vomit in my mouth just a little bit this morning. Not only did they raise the same ugly specter about Gov. Good Hair that I did yesterday. They included actual facts about the kind of stuff he's tried to ram down the throats of the good citizens of Texas. It's the kind of stuff William Barret Travis, Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett would never stand for. But the majority of the voters in the state keep lifting their coattails and saying, "Thank you sir, may I have another!"

Pornography Is Found in Bin Laden Compound Files, U.S. Officials Say (New York Times)

By Scott Shane
 May 13, 2011

WASHINGTON — The enormous cache of computer files taken from Osama bin Laden’s compound contained a considerable quantity of pornographic videos, American officials said on Friday, adding a discordant note to the public image of the Islamist militant who long denounced the West for its lax sexual mores.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity about classified material, would not say whether there was evidence that Bin Laden or the other men living in the house had acquired or viewed the material.

The discovery of the pornography, first reported by Reuters, may not be surprising in a collection of five computers, 10 hard drives and dozens of thumb drives and CDs whose age and past ownership is not known.

But the disclosure could fuel accusations of hypocrisy against the founder of Al Qaeda, who was 54 and lived with three wives at the time of his death, and will be welcomed by counterterrorism officials because it could tarnish his legacy and erode the appeal of his brand of religious extremism.

In a 2002 “letter to the American people,” Bin Laden denounced American culture for its exploitation of women’s bodies in dress, advertising and popular culture.

2012 Election Cancelled; Obama Buoyed by 100 Percent Approval Rating (Borowitz Report)

WASHINGTON - NOVEMBER 2: In this photo provid...Barack Obama, image by Getty Images via @daylifeEmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYouTube

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report) – In what historians are calling an unprecedented development in American politics, both major parties decided today to cancel the 2012 election.

The decision to scrap the 2012 contest came on the heels of a new poll showing President Barack Obama with an approval rating of one hundred percent, believed to be a record high for an American president.

Mr. Obama even polled well among Republicans, with a majority of GOP voters agreeing with the statement, “I no longer care that he wasn’t born here.”

The new bipartisan spirit sweeping the nation was captured well by House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), who tearfully told reporters, “This is a great day for America… oh, leave me alone, goddamn it.”

Revenge! Barack Obama Thumps Trump at White House Correspondents Dinner (TheWrap.com)

By Dylan Stableford
April 30, 2011

Donald Trump heard some boos when he arrived on red carpet at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday -- but that was nothing compared to what he faced inside the ballroom at the Washington Hilton.

Barack Obama got his revenge on Trump and the birther movement during his speech, skewering the reality star and would-be opponent in 2012 with jokes aimed directly at the absurdness of the birther issue and, more specifically, Trump's candidacy.

Opening with a video montage set to the Hulk Hogan theme “Real American,” Obama began his speech saying, “My fellow Americans” (emphasis his).

Why Ron Paul's Radical Vision Is Good for America (Esquire)

Ron Paul taking questions in Manchester, NHRon Paul, image via WikipediaEmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYoutube

by John H. Richardson
April 25, 2011

There is something that currently plagues our nation: a kind of irritable grasping after conclusions, the kind that made me stopped blogging regularly for a while, as I fought in myself that lonely battle of the last five or six people in America who still think that life is way too complicated for any summing up that doesn't involve math. But if someone held a gun to my head and asked me to say what I think about Congressman and — update! — 2012 presidential candidate Ron Paul, after interviewing him and following him around for my new profile in the May issue, this is what I would say:

Ron Paul is, or seems to be, a very sweet and shockingly naïve man who wants very much to do right by America. But his uncompromising vision of freedom would destroy America, really, by turbo-charging the powerful and the rich, who have shown throughout history that they have (with a few exceptions) zero social conscience and very little concern for the country. Already they've grasped most of the wealth and property in the country. Those in the top percentile are perfectly happy to throw Americans out of work and create jobs in China or Mexico if it means more profits, which they then bank overseas to avoid paying the taxes that create the relatively uncorrupted government under which they thrive. Given the nearly unlimited freedom from regulations and taxes that Republicans like Paul dream of, they'd be completely unrestrained. Eventually the desperate peasantry would realize, as they just realized throughout the Middle East, that the system was completely gamed against them. The result would be bloody revolution.

Slide Show: Top Ten Things Donald Trump Should Demand to See Next (Mediaite)

Attorney and activist Orly TaitzOrly Taitz, image via WikipediaEmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYoutube

by Tommy Christopher
April 28th, 2011

In the aftermath of the Birther movement (the afterbirth, as everyone is cleverly calling it), out of the wreckage of Orly Taitz’s long fifteen minutes, one undeniable truth has emerged: if you really need to see something that is completely meaningless, the revelation of which would be an assault on the values upon which this country is built, Donald Trump is your man. In a few short weeks, The Donald accomplished what thousands of conspiracy theorists, and dozens of court cases, could not, and what the accumulated decency of the American people had so far managed to prevent.

Who Said It’s Over? Fox’s Eric Bolling Questions Authenticity Of Birth Certificate (Mediaite)

by Matt Schneider
April 28th, 2011

To answer the question of why some stories will never ever die, last night on Follow the Money, host Eric Bolling invited political activist and “Birther” crusader Pamela Geller on to analyze the authenticity of the long-form birth certificate released yesterday by President Obama. Geller not only thanked Donald Trump and bemoaned “how the media protects [Obama],” but she also thought there was a possibility that this document was altered. Here we go again.

A new era of accusation and innuendo (Politico)

Barack Obama: An American PortraitImage by tsevis via FlickrEmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYoutube

By JONATHAN MARTIN & JOHN F. HARRIS
4/28/11

President Barack Obama’s appearance Wednesday in the White House briefing room to present a documented rebuttal of suspicions that he was not really born on U.S. soil was more than just a surprise. It was a decisive new turn in the centuries-long American history of political accusation and innuendo.

By directly and coolly engaging a debate with his most fevered critics, Obama offered the most unmistakable validation ever to the idea that we are living in an era of public life with no referee—and no common understandings between fair and unfair, between relevant and trivial, or even between facts and fantasy.

BREAKING: White House releases Obama's birth certificate (CNN)

EmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYoutube

(CNN) – The White House released President Obama's original birth certificate Wednesday.
The surprise release follows recent and sustained remarks by businessman Donald Trump, among others, that raised doubts as to whether the president was born in the United States.

"This whole birther debate has been really bad for the Republican Party," White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said.  But the discussion is "crowding out the debate" on more important issues and is a distraction, he added.

The so-called "birther" debate is "good politics" but "bad for the country," said Pfeiffer.

Karl Rove: Birther Issue Turned Donald Trump Into A ‘Joke Candidate’ (Mediaite)

Karl Rove Assistant to the President, Deputy C...Karl Rove, image via WikipediaEmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYoutube

by Frances Martel
April 16th, 2011

Reality TV and real estate personality Donald Trump may be as far as nine points ahead in the latest GOP 2012 polls, but that doesn’t mean the Republican establishment is ready to embrace him with open arms. On last night’s On the Record, Karl Rove did his best to distance the party from the Donald, telling Greta Van Susteren that his “weird conspiracy theories” about President Obama’s birth certificate made him a “joke candidate.”

After a lengthy discussion about the current budget battle in Congress in which Rove claimed Republicans had attained victory, if only because the federal government’s budget authority had been reduced by $60 billion, Van Susteren questioned Rove on Trump’s impact on the Republican Party. Rove refused to answer whether Trump “hurt” the Party, noting instead that his obsession with President Obama’s birth certificate “hurts Donald Trump.” “He was an interested candidate who had a business background and could have contributed to dialogue,” Rove lamented, adding that making the birth certificate a centerpiece of his campaign delegitimized him. “He’s off there in the nutty right, and is not an inconsequential candidate,” Rove concluded, adding that “the guy is smarter than this” and he was “sorry to see it happen.” He also denounced claims that President Obama didn’t go to school, citing a friend who was a classmate of the President’s, and the conspiracy theory about the newspaper reports in Hawaii.
