Comic’s PAC Is More Than a Gag (New York Times)

Let’s start with a spot political quiz. Which of the following are legitimate political action committees known as Super PACs, and which is fake?

A) Citizens for a Working America

B) Make Us Great Again

C) Citizens for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow

D) We Love USA

If you guessed that C was the fake, you’d be wrong. It was a trick question: these are all legitimate Super PACs. “Citizens for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow” was created by the comedian Stephen Colbert, which makes it funnier.

But not by much. Citizens for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow may be a running gag on “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central, but it is spending money as it sees fit, with little in the way of disclosure, just like its noncomedic brethren.

Fox News Estimates Jon Stewart’s Crowd at Seven People (Borowitz Report)

Constructing SanityImage by TalkMediaNews via FlickrWASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report) – The Fox News Channel reported today that the turnout for Jon Stewart’s “Rally to Restore Sanity” was underwhelming at best, with Fox sources estimating the total turnout at seven people.

“Our total count includes Stewart, [Stephen] Colbert, and what appear to be a few of their friends and relatives,” said Fox anchor Shepard Smith.  “This has to be a smaller crowd than they were expecting.”

VIDEO: Stephen Colbert destroys Laura Ingraham and her "Obama Diaries"

This is amazing: Stephen Colbert destroys the entire premise of Laura Ingraham's bestselling (if painfully ludicrous) The Obama Diaries while encouraging viewers to buy it. She's got that Dan Quayle deer-in-the-headlights look by the time it's over. "It is the most banal turns of phrase," he says, referring to Barack Obama's alleged diaries but actually zinging Ingraham's weak prose.

Facts, schmacts? Not while Politifact and This Week's Jake Tapper are watching! (Mr. Media)

The Colbert ReportImage via Wikipedia
By BOB ANDELMAN

If you’re going to get called on the carpet for something you did right, might as well be by Stephen Colbert on Comedy Central’s whirlwind of truthiness, “The Colbert Report.”

That’s what happened about a week ago to Bill Adair, Pulitzer Prize winning editor of Politifact.com, the online fact-checking operation spawned by the St. Petersburg Times.

In case you missed this story, Jake Tapper, interim host of ABC’s Sunday morning political chat fest, “This Week,” announced his guests’ most questionable claims would be subject to fact checking by Politifact.

Meanwhile, over at NBC’s venerable “Meet The Press,” host David Gregory dismissed the need for fact-checking his guests. I understand his point; does anyone fact-check the wrestlers’ claims on "WWE Smackdown"? Of course not. It’s pure, scripted entertainment. Not something anyone takes seriously.

Colbert even invited Tapper and Adair on his show to discuss their work.

Politifact uses a series of truth-o-meters to declare politicians’ boldest statements either true, untrue, half-true or “pants-on-fire” lies. It won a Pulitzer Prize for its work in 2009, which was the first time Bill Adair was on Mr. Media. Now that he’s been discovered by Colbert, he’s a tougher guest to book, but we’re always delighted to have him.
Hear it now!BILL ADAIR AUDIO EXCERPT: "The result is some good fact checking that wouldn't have been done before."

Political Strategery with Stephen Colbert and Spider-Man

From the Official Marvel Comics Press Release (Oct. 1, 2008): "As the world-famous Stephen Colbert continues his bid for the US Presidency in the Marvel Universe, what could force him and Spider-Man to team up? And how will this affect the US Presidential race in the Marvel U?"
