(CNN) – The editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel criticized efforts by Herman Cain's campaign to discredit the newspaper's interview with the presidential candidate when he stumbled over questions on Libya and collective bargaining.

"Trying to spin it and say it was edited or handled some other way is just not accurate," Marty Kaiser said Tuesday on CNN's "American Morning."

After video of the interview went viral Monday, Cain Communications Director J.D. Gordon said the video was "out of context in some measure," adding that the former pizza executive endured 45 minutes of questions from the paper's editorial board.

Huntsman Says He’d Be Open to Being Bachmann’s VP (Slate.com)

Jon Huntsman said Monday that he’d be open to filling out the VP slot on the Republican ticket if Michele Bachmann were to win the party's presidential nomination.

Huntsman, who has so far struggled to break through into the top tier of GOP presidential candidates, made the somewhat surprising admission Monday night during an interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan. After Morgan then pointed out that his comments would likely be perceived as the admission of a possible defeat, Huntsman appeared to backtrack slightly, saying he gave a “more or less a hypothetical answer.”

As can be the case with television interviews, especially whenever politicians are concerned, it wasn’t exactly clear whether the interviewer and the interviewee were on exactly the same page. Still, Huntsman’s comments made clear that he’d be hard pressed to turn down the VP slot if offered, whether by Bachmann or another candidate.

The Bin Laden Raid: Anatomy of a Sloppy Spin Job (TheWrap.com)

the CNN-Youtube Republican DebateImage via WikipediaEmail • Twitter • Facebook • LinkedIn • YouTube

The Bin Laden operation was a success. But the spin control has been a total muddle.

After intoning that the terrorist leader died in a “firefight” late Sunday, the White House has been forced to backtrack with an amended storyline that is less the stuff of myth and more the ugly truth.

"I don't see any evidence of a deliberate plan to mislead, but they should have maintained tighter controls of the message," Bill Schneider, CNN Senior Political Analyst, told TheWrap. "In this poisonous political atmosphere, both sides are always bound to see plots and conspiracies."

BREAKING: White House releases Obama's birth certificate (CNN)

(CNN) – The White House released President Obama's original birth certificate Wednesday.
The surprise release follows recent and sustained remarks by businessman Donald Trump, among others, that raised doubts as to whether the president was born in the United States.

"This whole birther debate has been really bad for the Republican Party," White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said.  But the discussion is "crowding out the debate" on more important issues and is a distraction, he added.

The so-called "birther" debate is "good politics" but "bad for the country," said Pfeiffer.

Gergen: ‘If Gov. Fought WWII Like Oil Spill We’d Be Speaking German’ (Mediaite)

The President Obama/BP Oil Spill pile-on continues. It’s starting to feel like the new media sporting event. Over at CNN last night James Carville continued his tirade calling for “heads to roll” and the normally low key David Gergen noted that “if our government had fought WWII like the way we’re fighting the oil spill, there’s a good chance many of us would be speaking German today.” Them’s fighting words!

Dumb Like a Fox (Columbia Journalism Review)

Fox News Channel controversiesImage via Wikipedia
By Terry McDermott
March/April issue

Last December 10 was a big news day. U.S. Senate negotiators announced they had agreed to a compromise on health care reform, final preparations were being made for a global conference on climate change, President Obama accepted the Nobel Peace Prize, and new details emerged on five young American men who had been arrested in Pakistan on suspicion of plotting terror attacks. Not to mention that America was involved in two wars and was still in the throes of the worst recession in eighty years.

That night, the main news programs on the three cable news networks—CNN Tonight on CNN, Fox Report on Fox, and The Big Picture on MSNBC—all led with approximately five minutes of coverage of Obama, cutting between video of his acceptance speech and reports from on-the-ground reporters in Oslo. CNN and MSNBC also included on-air analysis of the speech by a variety of commentators. Fox had no such commentary on its news show, just a more-or-less straightforward report on the speech.
This might seem surprising, given the charges of bias leveled against Fox by members of the Obama administration. Charges, for example, like this from Anita Dunn, then the administration’s director of communications, speaking last October on Howard Kurtz’s CNN program, Reliable Sources:
The reality of it is that Fox News often operates almost as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party. And it is not ideological. . . . What I think is fair to say about Fox, and the way we view it, is that it is more of a wing of the Republican Party. . . . They’re widely viewed as a part of the Republican Party: take their talking points and put them on the air, take their opposition research and put it on the air. And that’s fine. But let’s not pretend they’re a news organization like CNN is.

Dobbs: 2012 presidential run not "crazy" (Politico.com)

By Glen Thrush

Watch your back, Glenn Beck.

Ex-CNNer Lou Dobbs tells WTOP this morning that he feels "liberated and emancipated" since leaving the network — and he's not ruling out the possibility of running for president in 2012.

When one of the WTOP anchors joked that pundits were floating the crazy idea of the immigration-fixated Dobbs running for president, he shot back: "What's so crazy about that?" — and disclosed that he's talking to advisers to suss out his political options.

"For the first time I'm actually listening to [people who want him to run for office]. ... I don't think I have the nature for it. ... But we've got to do something for this country."
