Republicans Propose Replacing Social Security with Groupons (Borowitz Report)
WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report) – Presenting what he called a revolutionary plan to slash the nation’s mountain of debt, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) today proposed eliminating the Social Security program in its entirety and replacing it with Groupons.
“Instead of waiting each month for a check from Social Security, America’s elderly will receive valuable Groupons for everything they need, from Ramen noodles to cat food to caskets,” Mr. Ryan said in an appearance on Fox News.
Adding that Groupons would also help provide for elders’ medical needs, the congressman illustrated his point by holding up a Groupon offering 30 percent off on open-heart surgery in Cincinnati.

Why Ron Paul's Radical Vision Is Good for America (Esquire)
by John H. Richardson
April 25, 2011
There is something that currently plagues our nation: a kind of irritable grasping after conclusions, the kind that made me stopped blogging regularly for a while, as I fought in myself that lonely battle of the last five or six people in America who still think that life is way too complicated for any summing up that doesn't involve math. But if someone held a gun to my head and asked me to say what I think about Congressman and — update! — 2012 presidential candidate Ron Paul, after interviewing him and following him around for my new profile in the May issue, this is what I would say:
Ron Paul is, or seems to be, a very sweet and shockingly naïve man who wants very much to do right by America. But his uncompromising vision of freedom would destroy America, really, by turbo-charging the powerful and the rich, who have shown throughout history that they have (with a few exceptions) zero social conscience and very little concern for the country. Already they've grasped most of the wealth and property in the country. Those in the top percentile are perfectly happy to throw Americans out of work and create jobs in China or Mexico if it means more profits, which they then bank overseas to avoid paying the taxes that create the relatively uncorrupted government under which they thrive. Given the nearly unlimited freedom from regulations and taxes that Republicans like Paul dream of, they'd be completely unrestrained. Eventually the desperate peasantry would realize, as they just realized throughout the Middle East, that the system was completely gamed against them. The result would be bloody revolution.

Rand Paul, Jack Conway Brawl Over 'Aqua Buddha' (Newser)
Newser Staff
Oct 18, 2010
(Newser) – The words “ugly” and “new low” are being tossed around a lot in reports of last night’s Kentucky Senate debate, in which Rand Paul and Jack Conway sparred over a new Conway ad bashing Paul for his alleged “Aqua Buddha” shenanigans. (Background available here and here.) Paul accused Conway of attacking his religious beliefs. Conway said the ad wasn't about religion, to howls from the crowd. “Values matter,” he protested. “When is it ever a good idea to tie up a woman and ask her to kneel before Aqua Buddha?”

Ex-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin rips President Obama on budget, war on terror at Tea Party Convention (NYDailyNews.com)
BY Tina Moore

Sarah Palin was the life of the Tea Party Saturday night.
The former GOP vice presidential candidate teed off on President Obama's leadership, saying a failed attempt to blow up an airliner on Christmas Day was evidence of how he's mishandling the war on terror.
"To win that war, we need a commander in chief, not a professor of law," Palin told followers of the grass-roots conservative movement.
Palin, the former governor of Alaska, also told about 1,000 people at the event in Nashville, Tenn., that Obama's proposed 2011 budget is "immoral" because it increases the national debt, which she called "generational theft."
