Angry Ron Paul Accuses Lawrence O’Donnell Of Breaking Pre-Show Agreement (Mediaite)

by Frances Martel
October 12th, 2010

In what is unarguably the most explosive interview in the infancy of The Last Word, Republican Rep. Ron Paul had a logisitical on-air disagreement with host Lawrence O’Donnell that, while not the centerpiece of the discussion on the Tea Party, certainly colored the rest of the debate an ugly shade of contentious and uncomfortable that recalled his son Rand’s debate with Rachel Maddow.

Blagojevich guilty on one count, mistrial on 23 others

U.S. attorneys say the government plans to retry the case

CHICAGO — A federal jury found former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich guilty on Tuesday of one count of lying to federal agents, and the judge said he intends to declare a mistrial on the remaining counts.

Prosecutors said immediately after the verdict was read that they intend to retry the case against Blagojevich and his co-defendant brother as soon as possible. He had faced 24 counts in all, including charges that he tried to sell or trade President Barack Obama's old Senate seat.

Esquire Writer On Newt Gingrich: ‘It Was The Racism That Threw Me’ (Mediaite)

WASHINGTON - AUGUST 13: Former Republican Spe...Newt Gingrich, image by Getty Images via @daylife
by Colby Hall | 9:42 am, August 11th, 2010

Yesterday Esquire released a rather explosive 8,000 word essay about former Clinton-era Speaker of the House and presumptive GOP Presidentail Candidate Newt Gingrich. The epic expose is sure to make a lot of news, and become an ongoing factor in Gingrich’s political future, because the writer chose a very interesting method of getting to know the candidate: by interviewing his ex-wife Marianne Gingrich. In a follow up blog post, writer John H. Richardson revealed his motivation behind the interview: his racist comments.

In a separate blog post entitled “Why Marianne Gingrich Told Me About a Vulnerable Newt,” Richardson opened:
It was the racism that threw me. As a reporter, I’ve always believed that everyone has some kind of inner coherence. No matter how inexplicable their behavior may be, there is always logic somewhere.
This proved true with a multitude of subjects, from murderers to movie stars. Until Newt Gingrich.

The Comedian as Politician, and Often Vice Versa (New York Times)

By EDWARD ROTHSTEIN

Bob Hope Collection, Library of Congress

WASHINGTON — “It’s great for a comedian to be honored in Washington,” Bob Hope said when he was celebrated at the Kennedy Center in 1985. “If there was ever a city that knew how to get laughs ... .”
“There are so many congressmen and senators here,” he added. “I don’t know whether to tell a joke or pass a bill.” Pause. “As if there was a difference.”

Or on another occasion: “The farmers hate to see it end,” he said, after the 1984 presidential election. “All those campaign speeches were good for the crops.”

Evidence can't be ignored: It's been a disaster (Augusta Chronicle Editorial)

Little more than a year into his presidency, Obama's luster is tarnished by a dismal record

Augusta Chronicle Editorial Staff
Sunday, May 30, 2010

President Obama's core supporters, though increasingly lonely, are no less convinced of his greatness a year-plus into his presidency.

The problem is, like a writer to The Chronicle's Rants & Raves on Thursday, they're hanging their hats on the indisputable glory of his breakthrough election in 2008 -- not on what he's done or not done since.

Supporters claim his critics just can't get over his election; in truth, it's his supporters who need to move on, as the rest of us have.

A dispassionate review of the president's actual record -- not emotions for or against him -- is what we should judge him by, and what historians absolutely will weigh.

Gergen: ‘If Gov. Fought WWII Like Oil Spill We’d Be Speaking German’ (Mediaite)

The President Obama/BP Oil Spill pile-on continues. It’s starting to feel like the new media sporting event. Over at CNN last night James Carville continued his tirade calling for “heads to roll” and the normally low key David Gergen noted that “if our government had fought WWII like the way we’re fighting the oil spill, there’s a good chance many of us would be speaking German today.” Them’s fighting words!

Peggy Noonan Calls John McCain’s ‘Dang Fence’ Commercial ‘Desperate’ (Mediaite)

John McCain presidential campaign, 2008Image via Wikipedia
(Editor's Note: Peggy Noonan is the patron saint of this site; she is the reason we exist!)

The Meet the Press roundtable has some not-so-pleasant things to say about John McCain and his latest “complete the dang fence” campaign commercial.

Said panelist Peggy Noonan after viewing the video: “Yes, oh dang was the worst part. I don’t know its impact, it seems desperate.”

Responded Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter, who just published his own book on the 2008 election: “You have to round up and deport his principles in this race? It’s just kind of a sad thing.”

Ouch.

Lorne Michaels, Seth Myers on Politics & SNL (FishBowlNY)

Saturday Night Live (season 35)Image via Wikipedia
By Kevin Allocca
Mar 03, 2010

... Eventually, the conversation turned to politics, and Lorne Michaels insisted, "We try very hard not to be partisan. Whoever you are we're against it." Seth Meyers said getting across a point of view is not a priority, "You try so hard to be funny, you just worry about that."

Michaels said that when Sarah Palin was on she was "incredibly gracious," "extremely likeable," and "clearly a star." In regards to those famous political sketches, he said, "We deal in the world of perception. It's not real."

If you're one of those people who thinks SNL's not as funny as it used to be, you're not alone. Michaels says, "[People say,] 'You know what the great period was?' It's almost always when they were in high school." He said that's the time when "people bond with the cast."

Mike Lupica: Tea Party favorite Sarah Palin has delusions of grandeur if she thinks she can be President (New York Daily News)

Transparentised version of :Image:Gluehlampe 0...Image via Wikipedia
February 8th 2010
Now Sarah Palin comes right out and says it, that she really is thinking about running for President in 2012. She says it in the same starry-eyed way kids talk about growing up to be astronauts, but actually seems to believe it, that somehow she can go from being this kind of pinup girl for her Tea Party friends to the White House.

"I think it would be absurd to not consider what it is that I can potentially do to help our country," Palin told Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday."

Now there are many, many ways Sarah Palin could help this country. Running for President will never be one of them. You listen to her long enough and actually feel yourself getting dimmer by the minute, like a dying light bulb.

Closer inspection of a photo of Sarah Palin, during a speech in which she mocked President Obama for his use of a teleprompter, reveals several notes written on her left hand. The words "Energy", "Tax" and "Lift American Spirits" are clearly visible.

Ahh sweet Earl Grey Revolution! Sarah Palin knew that speech like the back of her hand. The Q&A answers, however, were on the front of her hand.

Or so it appeared.

During the Q&A following her speech at the Tea Party Convention, Ms. Palin appeared to read from her hand in answering.

Sarah Palin PAC Paid $47,777 for Memoir Copies (Galleycat)

palinbook23.jpgAs news of price wars obsessed the publishing world today, one political celebrity disclosed some hefty book purchases. According to filings from the Sarah Palin PAC, the former Alaskan governor bought $47,777 worth of copies of her memoir from HarperCollins. UPDATE 1: The LA Times cites reports that the Palin PAC spent more than $63,000 on book purchases.

If the campaign team paid the $13.50 hardcover price currently featured on Amazon, those campaign dollars bought more than 3,500 copies of the book. If they paid the full $28.99 hardcover price, they bought more than 1,600 copies. However, if they paid the $9.99 harcover price batted around during the Great Walmart and Amazon Price War, they could have purchased more than 4,700 copies of "Going Rogue: An American Life."

Reid Apologizes for Racial Remarks About Obama (New York Times)

From YouTube, August 27, 2008: Senate majority leader Harry Reid explains why he is nominating Barack Obama as the Democratic nominee for President.

Published: January 9, 2010

WASHINGTON — Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, apologized on Saturday for saying that he believed Barack Obama could become the country’s first black president because he was “light-skinned” and had the advantage of carrying “no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”

The apology was prompted by the release of a new book on the 2008 presidential campaign, which reported that Mr. Reid privately urged Mr. Obama to seek the presidency more than three years ago despite his limited experience and the historical obstacles to making a successful bid for the White House.

“I deeply regret using such a poor choice of words,” Mr. Reid said in a statement. “I sincerely apologize for offending any and all Americans, especially African Americans for my improper comments.”
