"Consider our man Scott Powers, who was sent over to the Winter Park home of Alan Ginsburg this morning as the designated “pool reporter” — aka scribe — for the fundraiser where Vice President Joe Biden is appearing on behalf of U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla.

"Turns out the veep hadn’t arrived, but about 150 guests (minimum donation $500) were already in the house. So to prevent Scott from mingling with the crowd, a member of Biden’s advance team consigned him to a storage closet — and then stood outside the door to make sure he didn’t walk out without permission.

Scott e-mailed us this photo from his temporary prison. 'Sounds like a nice party,' he wrote."

When 'Bite Me' Is 'Off the Record' (The Atlantic)

A day after Rolling Stone Magazine published an explosive profile of Gen. Stanley McChrystal, featuring raw comments and salty language, a sort of self-generated audit of Washington's journalistic conventions took off inside the Beltway.

One phrase in the piece, written by freelancer Michael Hastings, captured its tone and triggered this rare self-examination: An unnamed McChrystal staffer referred to Vice President Joe Biden, the man a heartbeat away from being his commander-in-chief, as Joe "Bite Me." It was offensive to official Washington, not for its substance, but for its ham-handed execution.

Sure, we talk like that all the time among ourselves, veteran insiders told one another. But how in the world did that stuff get into print?  How, especially, did McChrystal let himself get connected to some of that language?  And, oh, by the way, since when did it become okay to use cheap shot, schoolyard barbs uttered by unidentified and unaccountable mid-level staffers to disparage the McChrystals and Bidens of the world?

At a fundraiser yesterday, Vice President Biden joked about his hot-mic moment Tuesday when he said health care is a "big f---ing deal."

Biden said President Obama, at yesterday's morning briefing, said, "You know what the best thing about yesterday was? Joe's comment."

According to Biden, Obama also wanted a T-shirt made up with the remark, according to the pool report.

So Biden told Obama, "If you thought it was so good, why didn't you say it?"

Sarah 'Barracuda' Palin and the Piranhas of the Press (PoliticsDaily.com)

Sarah Palin's rambling abdication speech was hard to follow, let alone acclaim, but in her abrupt announcement that she is withdrawing from public office, the Republican governor of Alaska was hardly the only player in a 10-month drama who demonstrated a lack of self-awareness. Democrats scoffed at her "politics of personal destruction" line, but it's a maxim they originally popularized, and one they will undoubtedly trot out again the next time it happens to one of their own. But the true villains in this political morality play may have been the press.

The mainstream media is undergoing its demise, drip by drip, day by day, and its practitioners, which include most of my friends in life, are under considerable pressure. In my opinion, however, these pressures do not excuse the treatment accorded Sarah Palin. On the contrary, to me the entire Sarah saga revealed that it wasn't only the traditional media's business model that is broken. Our journalism model is busted, too.

In the 2008 election, we took sides, straight and simple, particularly with regard to the vice presidential race. I don't know that we played a decisive role in that campaign, and I'm not saying the better side lost. What I am saying is that we simply didn't hold Joe Biden to the same standard as Sarah Palin, and for me, the real loser in this sordid tale is my chosen profession.

The dumbing down of the GOP (Salon.com)

Sarah Palin's debate performance should signal the beginning of the end of her fad. But for the moment it is worth looking at the meaning of her nomination, without the protective varnish of what conservatives usually dismiss as political correctness.

Why should we pretend not to notice when Gov. Palin's ideas make no sense? Having said last week that "it doesn't matter" whether human activity is the cause of climate change, she said in debate that she "doesn't want to argue" about the causes. It doesn't occur to her that we have to know the causes in order to address the problem. (She was very fortunate that moderator Gwen Ifill didn't ask her whether she truly believes that human beings and dinosaurs inhabited this planet simultaneously only 6,000 years ago.)

Apparently there is a big national election campaign underway in the United States featuring an old man, a black man, a bald man and a woman who shoots moose.

Who knew?

Anyway, amidst all the noise for John McCain and Sarah Palin, Barack Obama and Joe Biden, Jeremy Redleaf has created a short, musical film parody called Juneau. It sounds just like that other movie of the same name with a different spelling. And instead of a pregnant teen named "Juno," it revolves around a pregnant teen named "Bristol."
