Joe Kaufman for Congress Reports: Obama and Wasserman Schultz sunning it up in Martha’s Vineyard

Gone Fishin' (film)Image via WikipediaMr. Media® Radio NetworkEmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYouTube

This just in from the campaign of Florida Republican Joe Kaufman: the President of the United States took a week's vacation in late August and was visited by U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. That's important for Kaufman, because he's running against Wasserman Schultz in Florida’s Congressional District 20.

This past week, as America’s northeast got hit with an earthquake and readies itself for a potential hurricane, President Barack Obama and DNC Chair and U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz have been taking in the sun at Martha’s Vineyard.

While Obama has been hitting the golf course, Schultz, his number one cheerleader, has been heading up various fundraisers for the President, under the title ‘Voices for Obama.’

Republican candidate for United States Congress, Joe Kaufman, who is looking to unseat Wasserman Schultz in November 2012, stated “Americans and Floridians are suffering, jobs are scarce, food and gas prices are way too high, and the country is preparing to face another natural disaster. What’s the President and his assistant Debbie’s response? A Massachusetts vacation!”

Hard to believe the brass balls of Obama and Wasserman Schultz, taking time off while Congress is in session!

Wait... we're just getting breaking news from the crack researchers in the It's Political Bullshit newsroom...

This is shocking! Shocking!

Apparently the entire United States Congress -- the House of Representatives and the Senate -- is on vacation from August 8 through September 5!

We're also hearing that Obama ended his one-week vacation early this week to deal with the approach of Hurricane Irene along the Eastern Seaboard. The nerve of that man to go back to work after less than a week while Congress stays out an entire month till the end of Labor Day weekend!

For the benefit of Mr. Kaufman, to whom this will apparently also be news, here's a link to the 2011 vacation and holiday schedule for both houses of Congress, thanks to TheCapitol.net: http://www.thecapitol.net/FAQ/cong_schedule.html .

Sinking G.O.P. Poll Numbers May Put Florida in Play (New York Times)

June 27, 2011

MIAMI — In the past few weeks, Gov. Rick Scott has traveled around the state extolling the accomplishments of the recent legislative session and promoting his success in pushing Florida down a more conservative, financially sound path.

So why is his approval rating the lowest of any governor in America?

“I don’t think about it,” Mr. Scott said in a brief interview when asked about his 29 percent approval rating in a Quinnipiac University poll conducted in May. More alarming for the governor: his negative rating has soared from 22 percent in February shortly after he entered office to 57 percent, suggesting that the more Floridians get to know him, the less they like him.

Mr. Scott, however, chalks up the numbers to his agenda. “Everybody’s scared about change,” he said. “I’m going to make the tough decisions because I know, long-term, they pay off. But, you know, short-term, everybody is worried about change.”

Florida Gov. Rick Scott launches newspaper writing campaign for himself (St. Petersburg Times)

Generic image of rick scottRick Scott, image via WikipediaMr. Media® Radio NetworkEmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYouTube

Gov. Rick Scott, the rare statewide politician who doesn't read Florida news, is asking supporters to send a letter to their local newspaper editor praising his work as governor. The letter, of course, would be printed in a paper's editorial section. Scott has yet to sit for an interview with any editorial board in the state.

Scott includes a pre-written letter on his web site that refers to himself as "refreshing" and that he deserves "unwavering and enthusiastic support." A link to the letter was included in an e-mail Scott sent to supporters today boasting that Florida's unemployment rate declined for the fifth consecutive month.

Florda Gov. Rick Scott's budget scene scripted down to who could attend (St. Petersbug Times)

THE VILLAGES — Each detail of Florida Gov. Rick Scott's first budget signing was painstakingly considered.

From the location — a conservative retirement community in Central Florida — to the mini-red "veto" Sharpie pens Scott handed out as keepsakes.

From the music that would announce Scott's arrival to the stage, to, it turns out, who could be there.

At the urging of Scott officials, Sumter County sheriff's deputies escorted a group of more than a dozen Democrats — mainly retirees who live in The Villages — from Thursday's event at the town square.

The reason?

The $69 billion state budget signing ceremony was a "private event."

Staffers and Republican operatives searched the crowd of about 200 looking for people holding anti-Scott signs. They were noted and asked to leave. Those with pro-Scott signs were allowed to stay.

The job-killing governor (St. Petersburg Times Editorial)

Generic image of rick scottRick Scott, image via WikipediaEmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYouTube

Gov. Rick Scott will sign into law today a $69.7 billion state budget for 2011-12 that he boasts is all about creating jobs and reducing Florida's high unemployment. In fact, it is a job-killing budget that threatens the state's anemic recovery and makes the state less attractive to new residents and businesses. The governor and the Legislature are starving the state instead of investing in it. Let us count the ways they are undermining Florida's economy:

1 State workers Positions in prisons, social services and other areas have been slashed. Scott says he's only interested in private sector jobs. State employees buy houses, cars and appliances, too — even if they have not had raises in five years. Estimated Jobs lost: 4,500.

2 Public schools Spending will drop by $542 per student, or 8 percent. School districts are sending out lay-off notices to thousands of teachers, including 1,400 in Broward and 1,100 in Pinellas. Some of those could keep their jobs. But Pasco schools could eliminate 470 overall positions and Pinellas could cut 400 positions. School districts are the largest employers in many counties. Estimated jobs lost: THOUSANDS.

Rick Scott for president? It's possible (St. Petersburg Times)

Rick Scott for president in 2012?

Absurd as it sounds, people who have talked to Florida's tea party governor about the Republican presidential field are convinced Scott has a bid lurking in the back of his mind.

"I'm not running for president,'' Scott declared the other day.

Probably he won't.

But let's say the field of Republican candidates still looks muddled and uninspiring come November. Let's say no one has managed to persuade Jeb Bush or New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to get in the race. Let's say fed-up tea party activists still dominate the GOP primary electorate and show no enthusiasm for the "electable" Mitt Romneys, Tim Pawlentys and Jon Huntsmans of the world.

Enter Rick Scott, fresh off a year of slashing spending and regulation in Florida, and of infuriating moderate Republicans, independents, Democrats and newspaper editorial writers. By then a proven, uncompromising antigovernment crusader, he may be the best sell among Republican primary voters in these turbulent times.

From the Florida House to national media, 'uterus' is runaway hit (St. Petersburg Times)

TALLAHASSEE — A little thing happened in the Florida House two weeks ago. A Democrat from Orlando said "uterus" during a floor debate.

No one much noticed, or cared, until word leaked that Republicans told Democrats they couldn't say the word.

Now people can't stop saying it.

Angry with cuts to education? Democrats say uterus.

Don't like giving Gov. Rick Scott more power? Uterus.

Upset with the way the Legislature is treating unions? Uterus!

Waiting for Joe and Bill (Orlando Sentinel)

EmailTwitterFacebookLinkedInYoutube

Posted by BShaw, Orlando Sentinel: "Not looking for sympathy here, but the life of a political reporter isn’t all champagne and canapes.

"Consider our man Scott Powers, who was sent over to the Winter Park home of Alan Ginsburg this morning as the designated “pool reporter” — aka scribe — for the fundraiser where Vice President Joe Biden is appearing on behalf of U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla.

"Turns out the veep hadn’t arrived, but about 150 guests (minimum donation $500) were already in the house. So to prevent Scott from mingling with the crowd, a member of Biden’s advance team consigned him to a storage closet — and then stood outside the door to make sure he didn’t walk out without permission.

Scott e-mailed us this photo from his temporary prison. 'Sounds like a nice party,' he wrote."

September 10, 2010

Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh and the Florida pastor who threatened (is threatening?) to burn Korans, Terry Jones, were high school classmates.

Politics Daily reports that the two attended Cape Central High School in Cape Girardeau, Mo. According to a Web site by someone who says he also went to the school:
Rush Limbaugh USED to be Cape Girardeau's most prominent export. One of his classmates from the Central High School Class of 1969 is dominating the news right now: Terry Jones, the Gainesville, FL, preacher who is threatening to hold an "International Burn a Koran Day" on September 11.

Aug 18, 2010

TALLAHASSEE — Sarah Palin endorsed former Hillsborough prosecutor Pam Bondi for attorney general Wednesday, and Bondi didn't even know it was coming.

Palin's surprise endorsement in the three-way Republican primary for attorney general surfaced on Facebook, and Bondi rushed to spread the word ahead of Tuesday's primary.

The former vice-presidential candidate and ex-Alaska governor, who's expected to seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, threw her support to other candidates, all women, in state and local contests in Alabama, Indiana, Missouri and North Carolina.

Palin called Bondi and an attorney general candidate in Iowa "bold, sharp, selfless women who will respect our Constitution, defend their states, protect our rights and push back against any overreach of the federal government."

President Obama opens offshore oil drilling and exploration - with Sarah Palin's approval (New York Daily News)

Gov. Sarah Palin has breakfast and visits with...Sarah Palin, image via Wikipedia
BY Michael Mcauliff and Kenneth R. Bazinet DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU April 1st 2010, 1:15 AM WASHINGTON - President Obama finally agrees on something with Sarah Palin: Drill, baby, drill.
Obama plans to open up parts of the Atlantic coast - from Florida to Virginia - for offshore oil and natural gas drilling, ending a 20-year ban.

He went left to win health care reform, now he's moving up the middle on energy - and he may have to tackle a few angry environmentalists and local legislators along the way.

Rep. Eliot Engel (D-Bronx) called it "a step back," while Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) savaged the decision.

"Giving Big Oil more access to our nation's waters is really a Kill, Baby, Kill policy: it threatens to kill jobs, kill marine life and kill coastal economies that generate billions of dollars," Lautenberg said.

Florida Lawmaker Attempts To Deny Tax Credit To Movies Filmed With Gay Characters (ThinkProgress.org)

A megaphone in a yellow icon symbolizing hype;...Image via Wikipedia
By Igor Volsky

Lawmakers in Florida are hoping to pass a $75 million incentive package to attract movie studios to film in Florida, but a little noticed provision could deny tax credits to movies that feature gay or other “nontraditional family values.” Florida’s Entertainment Industry Economic Development Act would revise the current incentive program — which already offers a tax credit worth 2% of a movie’s production costs if it is “family friendly” — to specifically exclude movies that depict “nontraditional family values” from receiving the additional credit. Here is the relevant provision:
A certified production determined by the Commissioner of Film and Entertainment, with the advice of the Florida Film and Entertainment Advisory Council, to be family-friendly…Family-friendly productions are those that have cross-generational appeal; would be considered suitable for viewing by children age 5 or older…and do not exhibit or imply any act of smoking, sex, nudity, nontraditional family values, gratuitous violence, or vulgar or profane language. Under the current incentive program, review of the final release version is not required and nontraditional family values, gratuitous violence, and implied acts do not exclude a film from receiving this additional credit.
State representative Stephen Precourt, whose district includes Disney World, says the purpose of the credit is to encourage movies to depict cinematic life from the 1960s. “Think of it as like Mayberry,” Precourt told the Palm Beach Post News. “That’s when I grew up — the ’60s. That’s what life was like. I want Florida to be known for making those kinds of movies: Disney movies for kids and all that stuff. Like it used to be, you know?”
