Santorum: What does McCain know about torture? (Salon.com)

John McCain has been on something of a crusade this week on the question of how we found Osama bin Laden, giving speeches and writing Op-Eds outlining his position that it was not torture of detainees that led the U.S. to its man.

Now comes presidential candidate and "enhanced interrogation" supporter Rick Santorum arguing on Hugh Hewitt's radio show that McCain simply "doesn’t understand how enhanced interrogation works." Yes, he's talking about the same John McCain who, in his five and a half years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, was interrogated during a program of beatings and torture.

Here's Santorum:

HH: Now your former colleague, John McCain, said look, there’s no record, there’s no evidence here that these methods actually led to the capture or the killing of bin Laden. Do you disagree with that? Or do you think he’s got an argument?

RS: I don’t, everything I’ve read shows that we would not have gotten this information as to who this man was if it had not been gotten information from people who were subject to enhanced interrogation. And so this idea that we didn’t ask that question while Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was being waterboarded, he doesn’t understand how enhanced interrogation works. I mean, you break somebody, and after they’re broken, they become cooperative. And that’s when we got this information.

Peggy Noonan Calls John McCain’s ‘Dang Fence’ Commercial ‘Desperate’ (Mediaite)

John McCain presidential campaign, 2008Image via Wikipedia
(Editor's Note: Peggy Noonan is the patron saint of this site; she is the reason we exist!)

The Meet the Press roundtable has some not-so-pleasant things to say about John McCain and his latest “complete the dang fence” campaign commercial.

Said panelist Peggy Noonan after viewing the video: “Yes, oh dang was the worst part. I don’t know its impact, it seems desperate.”

Responded Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter, who just published his own book on the 2008 election: “You have to round up and deport his principles in this race? It’s just kind of a sad thing.”

Ouch.

Oprah Winfrey-Sarah Palin interview for 'Going Rogue' shows TV hostess who's a master of her craft (NYDailyNews.com)

It’s never been clearer how Oprah Winfrey got to be America’s First Hostess of Television than it was when she chatted with Sarah Palin yesterday.

For Palin, this was the start of a week-long mission behind enemy lines. She’s talking with people, like Oprah, who mostly didn’t want her to become vice president. She’s in a forum, the “liberal media,” that she needs her supporters to keep mistrusting.

Oprah, in turn, played the good hostess. She tried to make her guest comfortable. She kept the conversation focused mostly on “Going Rogue,” the new book Palin is promoting. She steered away from areas of potential personal disagreement.

All that meant she also steered away from news, and she didn’t end up with any.

Memoir Is Palin’s Payback to McCain Campaign (NYTimes.com)

Published: November 14, 2009
“Going Rogue,” the title of Sarah Palin’s erratic new memoir, comes from a phrase used by a disgruntled McCain aide to describe her going off-message during the campaign: among other things, for breaking with the campaign over its media strategy and its decision to pull out of Michigan, and for speaking out about reports that the Republican Party had spent more than $150,000 on fancy designer duds for her and her family. In fact, the most sustained and vehement barbs in this book are directed not at Democrats or liberals or the press, but at the McCain campaign. The very campaign that plucked her out of Alaska, anointed her the Republican vice-presidential nominee and made her one of the most talked about women on the planet — someone who could command a reported $5 million for writing this book.

Sarah Palin in 'Going Rogue': John McCain camp set me up for disaster in Katie Couric interviews (NYDailyNews.com)

By David Saltonstall
DAILY NEWS SENIOR CORRESPONDENT

Sarah Palin says she was blindsided by Katie Couric's devastating interviews last year because John McCain's aides lulled her into thinking the CBS anchorwoman was a fan.

In Palin's new book, "Going Rogue," the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee reveals that her handlers talked up Couric as a working mom - just like her - who was struggling with low self-esteem and even lower ratings.

Couric liked and admired her, advised campaign media honcho Nicolle Wallace. The interviews would be a nice favor.

The scouting reports were so sympathetic, Palin writes, that that she almost began to "feel sorry" for Couric.

Billions in aid go to areas that backed Obama in '08 (USA Today)

WASHINGTON — Billions of dollars in federal aid delivered directly to the local level to help revive the economy have gone overwhelmingly to places that supported President Obama in last year's presidential election.

That aid — about $17 billion — is the first piece of the administration's massive stimulus package that can be tracked locally. Much of it has followed a well-worn path to places that regularly collect a bigger share of federal grants and contracts, guided by formulas that have been in place for decades and leave little room for manipulation.

"There's no politics at work when it comes to spending for the recovery," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says.

Cousin Martin Andelman's 2008 Political Year-in-Review

(Sung to the tune of "T'was the Night Before Christmas".)

RFP Nation

T’was the night before Christmas 2008,
And as I relaxed by the fire to contemplate,
What a remarkable year this past one had been,
So I poured a nice pinot, and dove right in.

When it started we all wondered just whom we’d be electing,
As to which one would win, there appeared no detecting.
But we knew one thing for sure, and for this we were happy,
Compared to Bush our next pres couldn’t be half as crappy.

Most thought Hillary would be our first presidential Mama,
Back then we weren’t quite sure that we’d all love Obama.

Of course, Edwards was running but we didn’t much care,
We were still talking about his fabulous hair.

There was Richardson too, and ole’ Tail Gunner Joe
And Kucinich whose wife looks like a very high priced ho.

Obama Wins: Why All Americans Have a Reason to Celebrate (Arianna Huffington)

Even if your candidate didn't win tonight, you have reason to celebrate. We all do.

Ten months ago, when Obama won in Iowa, we had a glimpse of what was possible and what became real tonight. What I wrote then about one state is now true for the whole country:

Barack Obama's impressive victory says a lot about America, and also about the current mindset of the American voter.

Because tonight voters decided that they didn't want to look back. They wanted to step into the future -- as if a country exhausted by the last seven-plus years wanted to recapture its youth.

And they turned out in unprecedented numbers today to make sure that no amount of scrubbed rolls, malfunctioning machines, endless lines, or polling places running out of ballots would block the way.
